Berney Arms Aerial Photography

These wonderful photographs courtesy of Norfolk pilot Mike Page and his aeroplane demonstrate the sheer remoteness of the Berney Arms marshes and give a real sense of the openness which is so characteristic of this area of the Norfolk Broads. Mike has taken many other pictures around the county, some of which can be seen on his aerial photography website.

    Steam on the marshes
A great atmospheric picture showing the steam engine "The Glasgow Highlander" pulling the Yarmouth-Liverpool Street "Norfolkman" special across the waterlogged Berney marshes towards Reedham. The train is approaching Berney Arms station which is just out of shot to the right. The mill tower can be seen in the background.

    Berney Arms marshes, looking East
A spectacular shot looking east towards Breydon Water with Berney Arms Mill clearly visible. In the foreground is Ashtree Farm and beyond the mill and round the curve of the river is the pub.

    Looking west across the marshes
This summertime shot shows the River Yare winding its way west towards Norwich. Many sailing boats can be seen following the well trodden holiday route past the sail-less tower of the Berney Arms mill. The flatness of the landscape is clearly visible in this view and the extent of the drainage ditches taking water from the marshes can also be seen. The Berney Arms Inn is situated in the lower right of the picture.
